Obesity Prevention

  • Creating a plan to prevent childhood obesity
  • Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity: provides policy briefs and reports on childhood obesity, poor diet and weight bias. Also includes a legislation database, research into food marketing. The page also contains a parent information and advocacy section.
  • The State of Obesity: Provides policy analysis, fact sheets and infographics and trend data on obesity levels and on issues related to obesity, such as healthy food access and physical activity.
  • The Nemours Foundation: Child Care Educator’s Guide: Nemours lists resources and information on healthy eating, physical activity, screen time, good sleep routines, and emotional health.
  • The National Academies of Sciences Engineering Medicine Institute of Medicine: obesity round table action guide.
  • The Virtual Early Education Center (VEEC): an online tool for early care and education (ECE) programs, including Head Start, Early Head Start, and child care. It is designed to have the look and feel of an actual ECE center. Visitors can move from room to room within the VEEC to find information on health and safety practices and useful resources. Use it to explore resources and information regarding Head Start Program Performance Standards and Caring for Our Children (CFOC). Learn more about health-focused ECE and best practices.
  • Obesity Among WIC Participants Ages 2-4, 2000-2014in recent years the national obesity rate among 2- to 4-year-olds has declined to 8.9 percent. Obesity among young children from low-income families also has declined: in 2014, 14.5 percent of 2- to 4-year-olds enrolled in WIC (the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children) had obesity, down from 15.9 percent in 2010.
  • CDC Reports Improvement in Childhood Obesity among Young Children Participating in WICa study published in November 2019 found 41 WIC state and territory agencies with significant declines in obesity among children aged 2-4 years between 2010 and 2016.
