What Happens After School?

Summer's over and the backpacks are overflowing with this year's school supplies. You can most likely rest assured that during the day your child will enjoy many learning experiences. There will be science, math, reading, arts and crafts, maybe even music. But then you wonder...what about after school, what will your child be doing between the final bell and the time everyone is at home again?

In any given area, there may be a variety of programs that you and your child will have to choose from. But just like child care for infants and toddlers, you must select a program that will meet the need of your child. One that is best suited for your family.

Not sure where to start? Start by thinking about your child's interests. Talk to friends and neighbors that may have their children in after school programs. Ask those you know for recommendations. The specialists at the local Child Care Resource & Referral agencies are always available to assist you in locating care in your area.

Most parents are interested in programs that are going to offer their children both educational and recreational opportunities. Below are some things to keep in mind while looking for an after school program for your child.

• Always schedule a time to look at the programs in person. During this time, make an appointment to interview providers/staff.
• Talk to children you might see at the program. Ask what he/she enjoys most about spending their after school time at that program.
• In addition to interviewing staff, be sure to observe the interaction they have with the children. Do the staff participate in activities with children? Do they communicate with the child at his/her level?
• If the after school program serves snacks, ask to see a menu or list of snack served. You will be able to see what healthy snack options are available to your child.
• Observe the classroom setting, or the environment your child will be in. Do you feel that this space is safe and clean? Are there age appropriate materials, toys, and games available for your child?
• Discuss with program staff the types of activities your child will be participating in. Ask what educational opportunities are available, as well as what recreational activities are offered for your child.

These are just a few items that you will want to take in to consideration while finding an after school program that best matches the needs of your child.
